Petronix Ignition and Tach

I am posting this for the person that bought my Elan.72 Sprint

He just had a Petronix ignition installed and the tach now does not work. I
am sure somebody out there knows the answer.

How do I get the tach to work again.?

The original tach will not work with any electronic ignition system. You
must send the tach off to a gauge repair shop to have the entire guts replaced.
I don't know where to send it, but I can advise of two shops that you should
not sent it to.

The Gauge Guys (APT Instruments in Bloomington, MN)
Nisonger (in New York)

I just had a Petronix ignition and coil put into my S4 to replace a
previous Lumenition (?) electronic ignition, which will not work
with the original tach. Has something to do with sharing the
current, which the Petronix can do.

I do not agree with you on this one. I installed a Pertronix ignitor ( here
in South Africa called an Aldon Igniter but the same thing ) and it worked
just fine on my original 1967 tach

I also for the last two years have run an ignitor in a 72+2 with no issues
except for the usual of once in a while the tach will not move from rest. A
good thump on the glass and it gets going just fine.

Dont know about other systems but Luminition works just fine in my

Tony,

The Petronix works with all Smiths RMI, current sensing tachs.
Although, if my memory serves me the original wiring doesn't provide
as strong of a signal to the pulse loop pick up because of the way
it is grounded. This can lead to an intermittent or a bouncing tach.
The fix is very simple and straight forward. If you have a fax I can
send you a diagram.

The wire to power the ignitor should not be connected to the coil. It should
be run to the fuse box or some other place that is hot when in the run
position. Otherwise the power drawn by the ignitor through the tach sense
wire will confuse the ignitor. This works for me.

Mark,

On the back of the Smiths RMI tach there are three terminals on a
common plate. Two are bullet type (one male and one female) and the
other is a spade. The spade is your positive 12vdc from the vehicle
ignition switch. It's the same source of power supplying the
positive terminal of the ignition coil. The two bullet terminals are
for the pulse loop pick-up. One terminal should lead to the negative
side of the ignition coil. The other should lead to the black wire
or negative for the Ignitor. The red wire on the Ignitor can be
connected to the positive terminal on the coil. Remember it's being
fed 12vdc from the ignition switch. So in a nutshell the pulse loop
pick-up in the tach is wired in series between the negative side of
the coil and the black wire from the Ignitor. The tach in my Sprint
works perfectly this way.

I also recommend fusing the the tach power (+12vdc) from the
ignition switch with the low amp, fast acting fuse to protect
against shorts or possible surges. good luck!
