I have an Elan +2 5 speed gearbox which I
want to install into my 'baby' Elan, I am missing one important piece of
information:- How long does the propshaft need to be ?
ie, I have the correct +2 propshaft, but it needs to be shortened
............. but by how much ?
I would be grateful if somebody could supply me with this information.

My plus2 shaft is 33 1/2" between u/j centres,so now all we need is a "baby" shaft and you can work it out

Dear All
Earlier this year i sourced a 5-Speed box for the +2,which i fitted (but modified the clutch release mechanism to utilise the same pressure plate as the earlier elans-this entailed boring out the bearing carrier etc.etc.)
After fitting i had slight problems with the movement of the gearlever but with a little fettling soon overcame this. The gearchange was silky smooth(just as good as the ford type-honest!!!) but......recently have been experiencing problems (mainly when hot)engaging both first and second gear, third and fourth are still O.K. I just wondered if the combined wisdom of the list may be able to shed some light on this.....heat expending the input shaft cover making the bearing carrier stick?but why only first and second?......synchromesh problems?is it common to first and second?......use of bog standard ep90 gear oil?......

But on the upside the mileometer is now accurate to 2/10 mile over 80mls as i found out this weekend on the H&H run.I can tootle along at walking pace in first and loose 1000rpm for the same roadspeed when in 5th.

Thanks in advance
John

Well, 1st and 2nd are on the same hub........I've no happy news......

could be something shifted, and it is rubbing on that side, preventing engagement but fear probelms with the hub/fork etc

I would try the box with Redline MTL gear oil. It made a signficant
improvement to my plus 2 5 speed ( and my Esprit and 4 speed elan
also). If the 1st and 2nd change is still unsatisfactory then no real
option but to pull the box and look for a cause if you can find one.

Finding the cause can be hard without knowing the specific allowable
tolerances on things like the syncro rings and hub so you may have to
just rebuild and hope it works better after the rebuild. There is an
article around on rebuilding 5 speeds which gives some of these
tolerances to check when rebuilding.

The idea was to have a complete 'kit' of parts ready to install,
BEFORE removing the old 4 speed box etc !! I dont want the car to be
off the road/track while I get the propshaft shortened, so I was
trying to establish the required dimension now, and get it modified
in preperation for the transplant, somebody MUST have done it before
and made a note of the measurement ? PLEASE !!

I already know the following dimensions:-
'Baby' Elan Prop:- Distance between diff flange face and end of
splined shaft is 26.5" or 67cms (approx and no sliding joint)
Elan +2 5 speed propshaft is 39.5" or 100cms between UJ Centres, with
incorporated sliding joint.
Elan +2 4 speed propshaft is 33.5" or 85cms between UJ Centres (no
sliding joint) So 6" shorter than the 4 speed prop ....... I really
need to know the 'between UJ Centres' measurement of a 4 speed baby
elan prop, and then subtract 6" ? Anybody agree or disagree ?
Thanks All,
Roger.

OK that should have been 6" LONGER than the 4 speed prop, not
shorter !!

Seems to me that if the propshaft difference between the 4 and 5 speed plus2 is -6",then the same should apply to the "baby elan".
that being so i don't understand the problem? You have the measurements of the "baby" propshaft???
thanks
John

John,
The propshafts are intrinsically different, the 4 speed props
allow for slight length variations by having an internal splined
sleeve that goes into the tailshaft of the gearbox, through an oil
seal, whilst the 5 speed prop has a 'sliding spline' arrangement
built into it, with a 4 bolt flange at both ends, hence the 'overall
length' measurement that I currently have for the 4 speed baby elan
prop, is of little use, I need the 'between centres of the UJ's'
measurement, then I can do the 'double comparison' maths ......... I
really hope that makes sense !!
Cheers,
Roger.

If you have not looked at the Lotus Service Bulletin on LotusElan.net
for retrofitting a +2 with the 5 speed. It has a complete list of
parts. It would be a good checklist to make sure you have thought of
everything.

Thanks Jeff,
I was aware of that very useful bulletin, what I really
need is details of the Propshaft part No:- A036 R 0038Z I have already
fabricated a modified gearbox crossmember and obtained the correct
speedo cable etc, so I reckon I've got everything covered except for
the damn propsahft !!
All advice very much appreciated,
Regards,
Roger. (Epsom, Surrey, UK)
