Stromberg Engine Mounts

I had noticed that the exhaust manifold was getting ever closer to the
chasis rail. A quick look under the car confirmed that the exhaust side
engine mount was starting to fail. After plenty of swearing and some
grazed knuckles the exhaust side engine mount was replaced. This did the
trick and the gap to the chasis rail was restored. However the bottom of
the rear carb was now closer to the top of the footwell, only about 1/4"
in it.

Now if the exhaust engine mount was tired so could the carb side mount.
After even more swearing and grazed knuckles the carb side mount was
replaced. Aarrgghh this has just made things worse as now the bottom of
the carb is in contact with the top of the footwell! Bugger! Looking at
the old mount it is slightly different to the new one I have just fitted
and sure enough the rubber insert has sagged. The car has a Spyder
chasis and I have checked with them which mounts to use, they say same
as the standard Lotus ones as the chasis is a clone of the Lotus original.

AFAIK for the Stromberg car the engine mounts are the same both sides.
Is the Weber mount for the carb side higher? Anyone have any ideas here?

Steve,

I just ordered a pair of mounts for my Weber engined +2, and I know that
the carb-side is different
to the exhaust side. I'll check the relative heights this evening and
report back.
I'm afraid I dont know if different height mounts are required in the
Stromberg case.

Steve,

I had the opposite problem. When Dave Bean sold me a "Weber" mount for the
carb side of my Stromberg engine, the carb came into contact with the bonnet.
When I exchanged it for the correct "Stromberg" mount, the result was that the
carbs were lowered and the problem was solved.

I thought there had been a posting here - or maybe on the
lotuselan.net site that concluded the current supply of engine mounts
are way out of spec dimension wise. All suppliers are as far as I
know affected.

I believe that on a Weber car the exhaust side mount is stock Ford, the carb
side one is specially for Lotus and raises the engine a little. My engine
was put in with Ford mounts and the carbs used to rub on the pedal box till
I got a proper Lotus mount for that side. Don't know about Strombergs,
sorry.

The stock Stromberg mounts have an airspace between the u-shaped side
that bolts to the block and the straight side that bolts to the
chassis. We had a failure where the u-shaped block side slid down
until the two metal pieces were touching.

Jeff at JAE sent me a set of stronger mounts without this space -
there is solid rubber in what used to be the air space. These are
much stronger and I would recommend them.

By the way - both sides are the same.
