need wiring and parts help on US spec 1970 S4 SE

PostPost by: Tim Moore » Thu May 19, 2005 3:10 am

I am cleaning up the wiring on my 1970 (US Spec) Lotus Elan S4 SE.. Am ready to purchase parts, but need some advice.. Where can I get a poster sized US spec Non modified , S 4 wiring schematic ? The one on Elan .net for the modified is fine, but very hard to see, I cant download the cad file S 4 diagram, and the one in The Elan owners manual requires a magnifing glass. I am buying a lot of stuff from Victoria British (Kansas) out of the TR4A Catalog, connectors, brake switch, bulbs, fuse box etc that are all the same as the Elan. Does anyone have a list of parts that are the same, interchange , Or that will work on an Elan,, for Triumph , MG prices??
I love the look of the 13" chrome trim rings on the Sprint, and wonder if the set of 4 from The Triumph Spitfire Catalog will fit my SE rims??
Does any vendor sell a complete "NEW" Wiring harness for a US Spec S-4 Elan??
The New Parts I need from JAE, Or Dave Bean are: Shifter boot, Door trim clips, Letter decal set, Front bumper chrome strip, Speedometer cable, Air box gaskets,Courtesy light complete as my plastic lens melted, ..
The parts I need that I cant find, are a good working main headlight switch ( with airtight vacuum and all the electrics intact).
I am also replacing the courtesy light and 2 speed wiper switches, ( Both have broken terminals) But I dont wish to go back to the original rockers that screw in from the back, anyone found a black rocker switch that can install from the front, fit in the cutout and not require a dash removal?? I am also looking for a new ignition that is 4 position, that is much shorter and does not cram up against my heater.. As of now I cant remove it, and it is to deep , all the wire boots have plastic chafing off against the heater.. Bad news..
I also have a broken windshield frame, the passenger side has cracked and broken from years of passengers grabbing the windscreen to get in and out. It is cracked at the base. Is there any repair.. ?? When the passenger door is closed, it is all good, but once the door is open, you can move the frame at the top an inch.. The rubber seal and glass pulls away enough to put a finger through.. Any repair ideas??
Jacking, I can find no information on where to place the jack to change my tires, It is not in any of my 9 Elan books. I also need the jack rachet.. Any ideas??
Thanks in advance for all help. 1970 Elan, S4 SE,,,, ***@***.***

I have a large Elan wiring diagram. I don't know what it will cost to dupe
it at Kinkos.but if you want to pay the cost including shipping.I will do it
for you.

And..I have jacked the car up in several spots over the years. For the
whole front.I cut a 2X4 little longer than the length of the front cross
member (reservoir for the vacuum?).and then I taper the ends so that it
sticks out into the area of the lower a arms. I then put a jack under the
center of the 2X4 and raise the car.

They say in the manual you can lift it by the bottom of the shock as well.

I have also done the same 2x4 trick with the area between the 2 wheel arches
for the side lift. Be careful that you make a hole for the outside bolt for
the seat track.

You are supposed to be able to lift the car in the area about 6 inches from
each wheel arch.like right near the door jams.I have done it ..but the
creaking makes me nervous.

I have also put a 2X4 with a real low jack.under the rear a arms.careful to
catch as close the outside as possible and catching the whole arm..and
lifted the rear corner of the car that way. I have never bent an arm.

As far as the wiring harness.they used to be available..

The headlight switch..last I heard was out of production and expensive if
you find one.

As for the rest of the switches.the dash is real easy to come out enough to
change the switches.I would not sweat it. I can take out a dash in a few
hours.

Let me know if the trim rings fit.I would like to know.

I don't know if that is everything you asked..but that is a start.

I got the wiring diagram from my workshop manual and blew it up to A3 on a
photocopier. Did a few copies so I can write notes and draw on them. If
you want it bigger again no reason you can't enlarge it in sections on a
copier, they do a pretty good job.

I took one of the CAD ones from the files, blew it up and printed
sections, then taped them together. A lot of work, but I now have a
4'x3' wiring diagram.

For English wiring see
http://www.autosparks.co.uk/
I have had great dealings with them - bought all the CORRECT color wire
for a harness, bulb holders etc.

For generic wire, relays etc try
http://www.waytekwire.com/

DISCLAIMER: I have no no financial interest in these companies, just a
satisfied customer.

Does any vendor sell a complete "NEW" Wiring harness for a US Spec S-4
Elan??

All of the usual suppliers sell a harness - it is in 3 parts front,
dash and rear. About $600-$700 for all. I chose to make my own, leaving
out unneeded wires (e.g. rear screen defogger)

Tim;

I had a blueprint shop make a copy of the S4 wiring dia. I'll look
around for a spare one. Look at British Wiring for harness. They
have them made up in England. http://britishwiring.com/
I bought some small bits and was pleased w/ product & service.

I agree. It's simple to enlarge the wiring diagram in sections them tape them together on a large piece of cardboard. There will be notes you will want to make on the diagram. Don't forget to take a lot of pictures if you begin replacing wiring.
