plus the Hewland MK 8/9 used a Zephyr crown wheel and pinion
Arno
Don't know what they did/do w/ FV, but the Hewland Mk series of boxes has the VW case upside down from normal VW application.

I am not as fortunate as some who can spend six months in the northern
hemisphere and 6 in the south, to notice the difference in water running out
of the tub
Secondly and more important , It's Ishqa bahar and soda, locally (in Cape
Town) known as lessons ,not brandy and coke, I'll let you know!!! Jeff
Wolfson can vouch for that.
Cheers

Take it Arno! I believe there's lots of ice in Vancouver to melt with the scotch!
PS the hewland diff has the zephyr diff carrier. The early hewland boxes used the original VW crown wheel & pinion, but with lots of machining.

In case anyone is wondering what this ice thing is about, Arno and I were reputed to have melted the entire ice suply at Phakisa International Racewayone weekend last year in consuming our scotch.
This was not true!
We left some for our good friend (and lotus elan owner) John Amm, to use inhis scotch.

It sounds like a fine idea - but the commute is just too long. But thanks,
anyway. Perhaps if I'm in the neighborhood...

Let me clarify - back in the early 1970s I built a Corvair powered
dune buggy. In order to use the VW transmission you had to set up
the engine to run in the opposite direction.

That would depend on whether you were building a mid-engine
buggy like a Deserter, and whether you started with a transaxle,
from a sedan or a van/Kombi, and whether you fitted the trans
up side down or right side up. The sedan transaxle was set up
for rear engine placement: the ring gear needed to be flopped
for mid engine placement. The van/Kombi drive train had a jack
shaft and an extra set of gears, which made the axle rotate in
the opposite direction from the engine: the ring gear was
flopped to correct the rotation. Fitting the transaxle up side
down would also require flopping the ring gear.
When I was working as a mechanic many years ago, the guys
at the VW shop down the road were always laughing about
some one or another who had unknowingly done a sedan/Kombi
transaxle swap and ended up with one low gear in forward, and
four gears in reverse.
The VW transaxle is unusual in that it was designed to allow
flopping the ring gear: it's the only production diff I know of in
which this is possible. I don't know how they allowed for torque
application in both directions, but this didn't seem to be a problem
in normal use. The gears in the trans always ran in the same
direction, so there was no problem there: they're pretty heavily
over designed, so they'd probably last pretty well anyway.

We only had 40hp and if there was any torque I was not aware of it.
Fred, them old VWs got me thru some pretty lean financial years.

Steve,
The guy who taught me everything I know about cars (Rob knows him because he
lives in Ann Arbor) bought a rear engined Devin in 1970. It came with a 36
h.p. VW engine and would scratch (break the tires loose going) into 2nd gear.
Before he installed a 150 h.p. turbocharged Corvair engine, he had to flip the
crown wheel in the dif.
