Engine removal question

I'm trying to remove the engine from my Elan while leaving the
gearbox and bellhousing in place. So far I've just tried pulling the
engine forward with the engine on a hoist and everything unbolted,
but no luck. Is this something that requires much force? I'm trying
to avoid damaging something.

Did you unbolt or at least loosen the transmission mounts. The tranny needs
to tilt a bit for the engine to clear the front crossmember. I've removed
the engine alone a couple of times. I find it a bit easier than trying to
remove it with the tranny attached since that requires the engine to be
rotated to the exhaust side.

Bob,
I managed this by loosening the gearbox mounts and jacking the front
of the bellhousing up a few inches - this gave enough clearance for
the sump to clear the front crossmember.

It is also important to remove the plastic consul from the interior to avoid damage to it when the shift lever is moved out of normal position while jacking the gearbox to the required angle.
