rear strut tube thread fix
Posted: Sun Mar 27, 2005 3:21 pmMy rear strut was making a lot of noise. I thought the shock was
bad so I removed the strut. In doing so I determined that the
threads were bunged up and that someone had drilled and installed a
threaded pin to hold the aluminum threaded nut in the top of the
shock tube. They also did not get the shock tight and it was loose
in the tube and banging around.
It was also rusty, so they had obviously not put oil in there. I
was thinking grease might even be better. I pulled the strut and
bead blasted it.
I had not seen this before. The threads on the tube are all right
lower down but bunged on the top. I managed to reinstall the alu
nut. I am thinking about tapping an additional pin hole. It
appears to me that this nut has to hold the weight of the rear
suspension as it unloads, but not more than that.
I am thinking that this would be a good safeguard. On the other
hand, where can I get these strut towers, can I just weld on a new
pipe section? Thoughts? Warnings?
