Chassis pad

Hi,

What have other people used to replace the pad over the
middle of the frame before the body goes back on, and a place to buy it.

Hi Wayne
I just leave the pad out, I have no radio so I need something to
listen to. The stock horse hair holds moistier and causes the
backbone to rot.

I used standard carpet felt, but covered it in heavy duty polythene sheet envelope to keep it dry.

I was advised to use a camping mat from Argos (about a fiver) it is
made of a closed cell foam and is obviously designed NOT to absorb
water. Cut to size it appears to do the job well.

I used some foil backed fiberglass duct wrap. It won't mold and it cuts the
noise and heat. Plus it is a lot lighter than the wetsuit material some have
used, and I got it dirt cheap from a DIY place that was going out of
business. I also used it for backing under the carpets.

IS IS A CLOSED CELL FOAM. AND COMES IN A 72" X 20" X 3/8" SIZE FOR $8.99

I have used closed cell foam approx 1" thick to replace the moisture
hugging felt on 3 Elans without any problems. I tape the top to the
chassis to stop it moving and spray the smoother outside face with
silicon to help slide the body on as it compresses the foam. Once in
position the fit is firm.
The foam was purchesed from a commercial insulation supplier.

Wayne- As I recall there was a long discussion about chasis pads about 2
years ago - so check the archives. That said - I went the closed cell foam
route because of water retention potentials. Used foam from wet suits and
1/2" thick. Cheap and will cause the next owner who buys my car and strips
it down to wonder what I was thinking! Ha! Everything fit beautifully.

If you want to go the neoprene route, and don't feel like cutting up
old wetsuits, kayak building suppliers offer the material in rolls,
as I recall in 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 inch thicknesses.

It's not cheap, but I believe it would be lighter, more durable, and
less problematic than some of the other suggestions. If a foam
camping pad lasts 30 years, this'll last longer.

In the U.S., I know I bought some from Chesapeake Light Craft in
Maryland some years back, and believe they've only gotten bigger
since. They have a website.
