Can an Elite 5 speed gearbox or parts of that gearbox be used for
installation in a +2?

Ed,

The Elite 5-spd can be used as a starting point, but there are differences
between it and a full Elan-spec version. The Elan tailshaft and housing
are shorter and would probably be the most difficult parts to source. Even
with the short tailshaft housing, the drive shaft is very short. Using
the longer Elite gearbox would only aggravate that.

Yes,the centre section is the same,different bellhousing and tail-end
