Sprint Colors.

PostPost by: tvacc » Mon Feb 21, 2005 5:39 am

I am looking for the paint code for the WHITE that is on the bottom of the
Sprint Elans.

I want to paint mine back to Sprint colors before I put it up for sale.

By the way.if anyone is interested before I advertise it more globally..let
me know off list.

It is a 72 Elan Sprint. Full restoration in early 90's including Lotus
Galvanized frame and Bean Halfshafts, Fuel cell in original location with
original filler. Spyder roll bar and side intrusion bars/

Also has European balance tubes and headers. Am in the process of replacing
the water pump. While I had the head off.I also had a valve job done.

This is a true Sprint with the original engine. With the exception of last
4 years.I have owned the car since 1986. Car is in Buffalo NY.but as I just
drove it back from Seattle.it can be driven anywhere.

Car is in excellent shape.

Tony,

Lotus had a couple of whites and I don't know which shade Lotus used on the
lower half of Elan Sprints. But the Lotus paint code should be on the
body's main number plate. Different alpha prefixes in the code denote
different paint chemistries... for instance, "L" prefix denotes
nitro-cellulose paint. L-code cellulose paints would be period-correct,
but they have been regulated out of existence in most parts of the world.
In the USA for sure.

Manufacturer abbreviations used below
PJ = Pinchin & Johnson
ICI = ICI Paints
PPG = Pittsburgh Paint & Glass Automotive Paints
DP = DuPont

L04 Cirrus White October 1962 - October 1973
ICI P0309049

IIRC wasn't there a statement by Wilkins that on LOTUS purpose built
Sprints (as opposed to upgraded S4) the white showing below the gold stripe
was gel coat?

Did they ever use pigmented gel on Elans?

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure they were Cirrus (which would be L04
according to the info in the reply above) My own '72 Sprint back in
1976 was original and it was a paint finish.

FWIW when I tried to get Cirrus in 2K from my supplier it was not
available. You can still get it mixed in cellulose in the UK.

It would have to be someone really observant and picky to realise what
white you use on the bottom of your Elan. I went for Ford Diamond
white (readily available in 2-pack) on my car

The bottom half color on an Elan Sprint is definitely Cirrus White.
(I wrote Lotus a few years back, and they have the bottom as Cirrus
White and the top as Carnival Red.)

Now I have a question... Does the defining line between the top and
bottom colors on an Elan Sprint continue into the door jamb and
around the door itself? (I just dropped my Sprint off at the shop
today to get the same paint job. My painter asked the question.) Can
anyone post a photo of this condition? Thanks!

I remember reading that the two colour paint job was to hide the poor finish between the top and bottom moulding. So I reckon that your paint shop guyshould try and follow that contour.

"I remember reading that the two colour paint job was to hide the poor

There always has been an urban myth that the stick on stripe on the
Sprints was to hide the dodgy join between the two colours.

There is no join in the mouldings at that point.

Going back to the question of colour. The problem is that the old
colour mixing formulae have not been updated for modern 2-pack paint
systems. Here in the UK my supplier can mix the old colours in
cellulose but not in 2K. Sometimes, if the paint supplier can be
bothered the manufacturers do have the formula on file but do not
routinely supply it to the outlets.

Why not just go for a similar modern white, who will ever know? The
other option I have used in the past to get a durable 2-pack finish
when the colour is only available as cellulose is to use cellulose and
then laquer it with 2-pack clear.

Just tell him to use 2-pack Diamond White and relax :)

I stand corrected! Perhaps my supplier lied or couldn't be bothered
but they carry Max Meyer (Yuk) and Spies Hecker (good paint).

I still say use a similar white and stop worrying :))
