Found it--now what? Re: Brake Fluid Leaks

PostPost by: davidwinegar » Sat Jan 15, 2005 12:05 pm

Ian, You were right--I checked under the pedals and my rubber mat
(luckily I had those and not just carpet) had brake fluid all over it.

Now what should I look for? Is it the master cylinder that is
leaking? Should I tear it all apart? Can it be repaire, or should I
look for a new one?

Thanks all for the suggestions.

It might be worth checking to see if the carpet and underfelt behind the

Subject: [LotusElan.net] Brake Fluid Leaks

Put my car away for the winter in mid November and now have noticed
that the brake fluid reservoir is loosing fluid. The leak is very
slow--I have filled it twice in the past 2 months adding just a bit
but it is for sure leaking.

I have looked at the obvious locations around the servos and all the
break line connections and even around the wheels to see if the
calipers are leaking, but so far nothing has shown up. I even put
clean cardboard under the car to try to spot leaks, but again nothing
has shown.

Anyone have an idea of where I might look or how I might go about
tracing the leak?

Thanks for the help.

Pull the master cylinder and rebuild it.

Easy job, then bleed the brakes.

You could put a seal kit in it I certainly would the clutch master but
as it is the brakes and they aren't expensive I would always suggest
fitting a new master cylinder.
