Solvent for washing carbs and things

Hi Guys,
I am in the middle of winter layup maintainance, and have got the
Dellortos off for a refurb..
Is it advisable to dump them into some kind of cleaner once they have
been stripped, or is this just a recipe for clogging the passages with
free'd up debris?
If it is advisable what solvents do you use? Petrol, white spirit,
cellulose thinners, isopropanol, methanol, ethanol?
thanks for any help
Cheers
Tim
