In the Lotus Elan .net web site ,in series 4 photo`s section Tom Roberd`s cam cover appears to have a vent pipe going to a catch bottle. Is this a worth while mod?,could it take some of the pressure in the cam cover away so reducing leaks .Regards John 1969S4 DHC

Venting from the front of the cam cover is certainly a worthwhile mod
on a racing elan using high revs continually to reduce sump pressure
and oil leaks out the front pulley seal which struggles at the best
of times to give a good seal. Probably not worthwhile on a road
engine, if you have excessive oil leaks and sump pressure due to
blowby in normal road use its probably time for an engine rebuild
rather than to modify the engine venting.

Many racing class regs require a catch tank be fitted also. My class
requires a 2 litre tank so the only space for it is infront of the
radiator and venting from the front of the cam cover makes the pipe
run easiest also.

However if you dont like venting the engine back into the carbs or
dropping it on the road then its probably easier to vent to a catch
tank from the front than from the original vent point.

When I upgraded to a 1700 stroker motor, I found that the stock
breather system was totally overwhelmed. I added the cam cover
breather, vented to a catch bottle, and it has been a great
addition. No road tube to oil the chassis, no oil in the airbox, and
less crankcase pressure with hopefully less oil leaks.
