Twin Cam Sump Capacity, dipstick

I put 8 US Pints of water
in the engine sump (shop manual capacity is listed
as 9 US pints including filter). On the bench, I
hasten to add :-)

This filled the deep portion of the sump and just touched
a bit of the shallow portion (say an inch _horizontally_
of the shallow portion, the part where the metal is curving over.

Adding 2 more pints US covers nearly the entire shallow portion
of the sump too.

Then, holding the timing chest on the sump, I discovered
that the 8 pints rose to the 'A' on MAX of the dipstick.
This horrifying discovery means I've been watching the wrong
place on the dipstick.

I've decided to follow the GGLC TECH article (www.gglotus.org)
and modify the sump a bit to prevent oil starvation. Hmm. Better
check LotusElan.net too. Any other sump-modification
suggestions out there?

Your bench reading w/ 8 pts would be higher than normal. After
running the engine some oil is held in the filter.

In a normal oil & filter change you'd see your reading after filling
the sump w/ 8pts, but it would read lower after running the engine
and filling the filter (at least a pint).

Maybe even more than a pint as in true Chapman style of every thing
doing more than one function, any excess is ejected via controlled
orifices and used as chassis corrosion protection
