Cylinder head breather

Hi Everyone,
Spent last night taking the Carbs (dellorto) of fthe lotus (for
overhaul, and to give access to the dizzy and fuel pump) and in doing so
the cylinder head breather tube (That feeds into the rear carb) pulled
out of the head!
Is this pipe really only a push fit?
The pipe has also had a T piece brazed on to it (I am guessing to allow
the oil vapour to be routed under the car rather than into the carbs)
any one seem this mod before?

Yes Tim, it's a push fit and over time the contact with oil/petrol makes the "rubber" go kind of soft. I found that all the oily stuff was being routed through one choke of the Dellorto into one cylinder, causing that to be much dirtier than the rest, so I just stuck a six inch length of 15mm copper pipe (nothing like mixing your measuring systems) into the rubber elbow and vent it straight to atmosphere. This was the arrangement on early cars. Before any of our colonial cousins kick off about pollution, when are you going to sign the Kyoto agreement and when is California going to make SUV'scomply with the same emissions regulations as they have for normal cars?!!;-)

I guess at the moment the venting is split pretty much evenly between
the route to the carb and the open T-piece. In fact if you rev the car
with the bonnet open you can sometimes see some smoke coming from the
open part of the tube...
Currently my only reason for having it connected to the carbs is in case
an observant MOT man sees it venting to the atmos. Which I think is a
failure...
The fact that the open end of the T is venting to the atmos. seems to be
missed as its open end is hidden by the bulkhead..
I guess as I am doing a carb rebuild I'll get an idea of how much crud
is ending up in the choke...

PS I agree with your emission on emissions, but when will people wake up
to the fact that Electric cars are the be-all and end all of emissions.
The electricity has to be made somehow, and in most cases (Scandanavia,
France, Iceland and Scotland aside) its by burning fossil fuels.

Go to your local bicycle shop. They carry a wide variety of water bottles
and cages. Looks and works good.

thru the carb either. The tanks I see in racing catalogs look kind of
big (and expensive) to fit the Elan. I've seen racer's use various

I am currently using a water bottle from a bicycle. However I have just
come across www.jazproducts.com who do a 1 Pint mini breather which is
ideal for the elan as it is very small - the breather, we all know the
elan is small

My favorite is to repurpose an aluminum fuel bottle for
camping/hiking. Come in a variety of sizes, look great. Only negative
is that you can't see what the fluid level is. For easy drainage you
can invert them and punch holes in the top (bottom).

Yes, that is what I have for my radiator overflow. I cut the
drinking nipple off, instered a gromet in the hole, then the tube
into the gromet. The bottle cage is screwed down from the bottom.
