Can anyone advise what the preload should be set at for an Elan LSD diff.

Depends on how fast you want it to "come in" and what your intended use is.

More pre-load means the LSD is closer to locking than less pre-load would do.

30-35 lbs/ft is a good starting figure for a road car, this figure will drop off as the clutch pack wears. More wear equals less pre-load so the diff will start to feel a bit slower activating as it wears.
Racing you're going to need to be more around 55-60 lbs/ft

If you have an aggressively set LSD the tendency would be for the diff to try to push the car wide in corners though hence pre-load is normally lower for road as you don't want to be in the bushes!

Ramp angles will make a difference to the overall feel of the diff too.

It's not quite as easy as saying "such and such a setting is best" though as drivers will have their own preference.

Thanks for the reply, it is for racing.
I have got the car handling good at the moment but just checked the diff and found there is no preload so I have taken it out and getting it checked over.
I am looking for a setting that would work without destroying the good handling and save having to keep taking the diff out to keep adjusting it

Would like any suggestions on ramp angles.

What LSD is it? 3J NXG?

Sounds like you've either got a diff that's set loose, worn plates, or a broken Belville washer.

I used 70% on the track but it wears quickly especially if you use it on the street also.
Depends on how the car is set up and how yoiu drive it. Check it often.
