Engine Mounting Alignment

Hello Guys,

I was just mounting the engine the other night when i noticed that Chassis side mounting face was not aligned well with the engine mount, causing the mount's rubber to be twisted when the bolts are tightened. is this normal?

I am concerned that doing so will cause the rubber to detach itself from the frame.

Hi Jan,

Mine was not perfectly aligned but yours looks a bit severe.

I'd share your concerns...

Don't know what's causing it, but I'm sure some more experienced posters will.

Have you got the correct spacers under the rear gearbox mount. It looks as if the rear of the engine is to low

I think Rohan is onto it. The gearbox mounts now being supplied are significantly different from the originals. I have not fitted mine to the chassis yet but a quick comparison of new and original mounts suggests that the rear of the gearbox will sit about 5/16" (8 mm) lower with the new mounts. You can check by measuring the thickness of your gearbox mount. The originals are about 1 1/16" thick across the "sandwich" of the lower steel pressing, rubber section and upper steel pressing where the bolt passes through to attach to the tail housing. The new ones measure about 3/4" thick in this region. This problem can be resolved by making up new spacers that fit between the gearbox cross member and the gearbox mount. The original spacers are about 7/16" thick. I think I will need to make new spacers somewhere between 11/16" and 3/4" thick to recover the orginal gearbox location. I don't know exact dimensions because my original mount has collapsed a bit due to load and exposure to oil. The parts suppliers don't seem to know anything about problems with the new mounts.

So it turns out you guys where right all along (as usual), I had a look under the car and there is no sign of any rubber mountings.

This means that the gearbox is at least 1 1/16" lower than it should be. I'm gonna have a look through the box of "extra parts" that the mechanic gave me when he gave up on ever completing the car, if I don't find them, am I correct in assuming that they are standard cortina/escort bits?

The good news is that the gearbox mount is cheap and easily got (usual sources...I got mine from Sue Miller )

Even better news....pretty easy to install the mount with Engine and Gearbox in situ!

I guess you're engine's so far out because the mount is missing rather than due to the differences between the old and new mounts....
