Tow Hooks

PostPost by: jkolb » Sun Apr 03, 2005 2:24 pm

Has anyone installed front/rear tow hooks on an Elan for racing? How are they fabricated and attached?

Thanx

The TTR racing chassis comes with the front hook in place, I could email you a picture of mine, if you like.

Jerry

At the rear I run a cable from the rear of the chassis back to beside the exhaust. I tie it with lock wire to the exhaust rear mount. If its ever used the lock wire will break and allow it to pivot with the direction of pull.

At the front I fabricated a frame from the front 2 chassis bolts just below the radiator to the air opening and mounted the tow point on this frame sticking though below the grill mesh. The frame doubles to mount a few other components such as oil cooler, horn, and also had air filter, driving lights and front number plate when it was a road car

I added a front tow loop (only one I was required to have by my local Vintage organization) by making one out of 1/8" (maybe it was 3/16"?) flat plate and welding it across the bottom center of the front crossmember, having filled the crossmember with Argon so that all the stale fuel which had undoubtadly been sucked into it over the years didn't explode! Worked fine, and provides a nice jacking point as well.

I use a cable wrapped around the chassis where the wishbone bolts are, and insulate the cable with a sheet of rubber wrapped around the cable. Both cables are about 5 mm diameter and have a U shaped mini clamp than holds the loop as a loop.
Being an Elan I have had to test then when the ignition failed and a hurried tow caused no distress to this cheap solution.
