Spinner Tool

Having just spent enough time and money refurbishing the steel wheels on my +2 I decided to manufacture a spinner tool to avoid the risk of ruining them and the pristine refurbished spinners supplied by Sue Miller. I wanted to ensure that the tool positively engages with the spinner ears and did not fall off whilst manipulating the breaker bar or torque wrench. So attached is a photo of the finished article I made using an aluminium backing plate, three machined Acetal blocks and a steel centre boss to suit the wrench drive. The spinner ears locate securely into the recesses in the blocks and are protected against damage by ensuring they only touch either the Acetal plastic or the rubber pad stuck inside the backing plate centre.
Fitted all four new spinners with no problem, without damaging them or the newly painted wheels. I will see how well it survives in regular use as the loading on the plastic is quite high (200+ lbs ft tightening torque).
Not claiming anything startling in this, others have made more elegant tools but satisfying none the less not to have to continue beating the hell out of the spinners.

coincidentally, I am working on a similar tool - [prototype] which will hopefully do the same job, but be 'cheap as chips'!!

Well done!

As I work in a machine shop and just yesterday acquired a '67 FHC with knock-ons, I wonder if you wouldn't mind sharing the drawing file and perhaps the G code for the Acetal pieces to produce a set of these for myself. It just so happens that we have a couple chunks of Acetal at the shop that were left over from a customer job a few months ago that I could make use of.

there have been a couple on ebay recently ...made ?150+...

There's been a solid Aluminium machined one on Fleabay recently.

Although the one pictured is specially machined for the + 2 Knock-on nuts, he will make you one for the 3 Eared spinners as well - I bought one and it does the job really well.

Cost was ?40. Excellent value.

(No association with the manufacturer, etc)

He specialises in Jag repro parts I believe.

If anybody needs details, let me know.
