Buying a '67 +2. What to look out for.

PostPost by: Johnfm » Thu Sep 05, 2013 9:22 pm

All

New to Lotus. Seeing a 1967 next week.

Judging by the photos, description and phone call with the owner it is in decent fettle. A bit of recent replacements and restoration done by him and previous owner.

Recently MOT'd, so happy that it is at least roadworthy.

I am realistic about a 46 year old car - but what are the real deal breakers to watch out for?

Is there a buyer's guide worth reading somewhere on this site or elsewhere?

Cheers

Firstly make sure it is not a fraudulent advert that you are following, there are a number about.

If you cannot SEE it before buying do not hand over any money,

Search this forum for FRAUD and also for SCAM to find topics pointing at the baddies.

Read this recent topic for some notes on buying an Elan.

Thanks Bill

Car exists - but thanks for the warning. Had long chat with owner - a proper classic car enthusiast.

Thanks for link too.

I have just changed my inner sills and must admit I didn't know they were there when I bought the car (1968+2)
A quick way to see the condition is to stick your finger in the jacking holes and see how much rust falls out, if it's like mine, the whole sill was just loaded with powdered rust!!
I paid ?279 for a pair from Spydercars (collected) but I think they charge about ?450 to change them
Just another thing to look for if you didn't already know. Kevin.

Thanks for the advice.

I will have a think about whether to drag someone else along.

agree with sills
also check the chassis

Both were shot when I bought my car, but I was young and foolish and though fiberglass cars did not rust.
