Compression test

Hello again

Good news today, I think. I performed a compression test on my engine and the results were as follows:

Cylinder 1 - 192 psi

Cylinder 2 - 198 psi

Cylinder 3 - 192 psi

Cylinder 4 - 198 psi

So that's a relief...! The last time this engine was taken apart was (according to the receipts) in 1991, about 42,000 miles ago. Result..?

It's a bit of a shame that I will have to take the head off to resolve the oil leaks, but at least I have a baseline for the compression readings now.

Well, oil leaks. Hard to see where they are coming from, despite cleaning the engine in situ. I might be lucky and find it's the cam cover gasket, but I don't get lucky often with this car.

Anyway, looks like my rings and valves are good. I did this just to be sure, as there are no symptoms of damage and it only took half an hour.

I ended up taking the sump off mine to fix a horrible leak only to discover it was the Cylinder Head Oil breather / drain rubber.

3 days spent on the sump.

Half hour removing and replacing the drainer which had shrunk and become loose.

All done in situ.

What fun.

Peter,

My drain tube did the opposite! - it swelled up like a banana reducing the internal orifice to 50% of the original size.

The resulting reduction in crank breathing did not help with my oil leaks!
