Brise Starter

Just took the opportunity to take a picture from my new Brise starter - not fitted yet. The ringgear on my car is a bevelled on both sides type, the rear wards bevelling grinded somewhat by the Lucas 9 teeth starter.
The Bendix was clean and fast, but cranking speed too slow. It sacrificed itself to save most of the ringgear. The top mounting ear of the Lucas starter was cracked. As pound is low for the Euro I took the chance...
And yes, the Brise is preengaged and gear reduced - all integrated in this nice, almost original shape housing.
I will report how it fits...
PS: I fitted a bulb fuelpump in the boot and just a few pumps and you can feel the carbs being filled and needle valves closing.

I also expect to receive a Brise starter for my Elan Sprint 1972. It was send from Demon Tweek last Friday. 195? + P&P + VAT.
My Elan has been a poor starter for a long time and the distributor was replaced in the autoumn with a new electronic system looking just as the original. It comes from Tony Thompson, and it really works fine.
I hope the replacement of the LUCAS interia makes the car start perfect!

The geared starter is so much better than the original fit.
The Brise seems very expensive - I had mine from: www.lukemotorsport.co.uk
He supplies either 9 or 10 tooth pinion types depending on your preference.
I bought a new alternator at the same time - lowest cost I've ever seen.

A member of the british Columbia Lotus Club designed and did a production run of 20 adaptors for Nisson gear driven starters about 20 years ago, I laid hands on one about 10 years afo. I can tell all that after 30 plus years of changing out 3 starters and 10 bendix gears I committed to non origionality and now go every time. No more syuck in a parking lot or - worse yet - getting a push start off our ferry from our rock (Vancouver Island) to that place called North America[Canada Hey].
ONLY way to go!

Hi Anna,
Where did you get the bulb fuel pump from?
And a picture of the fitting would be very nice!

The Luke Motor Sport one looks very similar to the one from RatSport.

Just from an ordinary boat supply shop - 5/16 tube dia, about 8mm
"Kraftstoffleitung" in german...
The fit is just a test setup and would profit from reworking
I bought a 10mm fuel line pump by accident and it was a bit hard to fit to the 8 mm rubber tubes.
Apart from this, total costs for doing so is 10 Euro.

Anna,
where did you buy the Brise Starter? I am in Hamburg and I think need one too.
And how does the Brise work? Easy fit?

direct at brise (google brise and starter) and tell them its for a Lotus Elan TC with two ear mounting flange.
Anna
has not fitted it yet... but looks straight forward as the starter is very slim
just a bit longer than the Lucas

I have one fitted but don't think it's pre-engaged. See previous threads on this. I bought it from Matty's as a pre-engaged unit but was advised otherwise after I'd fitted it. It works really nicely though, and I'm using it with an original ring gear as other people are - doesn't seem to matter.

I believe the brise is pre-engaged,it has the axial solenoid built into the end,so looks more like standard Lucas
