Lotus stuff on your walls - automobilia

PostPost by: elanfan1 » Sat Oct 04, 2014 8:20 pm

I was very lucky several years ago to be offered a genuine Chapman signature that a BA Captain had collected from the great man personally as he was flying him back from the Long Beach Grand Prix. The signature is actually on the back of a BA envelope. Mr C was apparently with a young lady he shouldn't have been (or so I was told)!!

The cartoon is from a book of similar motor racing caricatures drawn by the Cartoonist 'Sallon' who I think worked for the Daily Mirror.

I put them together and they sit on my study wall watching me make a fool of myself on t'internet.

A poster I got a few years ago from a run of posters that Lotus did at the time. Its signed by Ron Hickman who was at the Australian Lotus national meeting ( the dinner was at the Jacobs Creek winery in South Australia) andwhere I bought it in an auction. Cost way to much but was in a good cause and I could not pass up a poster with an Elan and Plus2 and the chance to get Ron Hickman's signature on it.

cheers
Rohan

Pictures are one's on my garage wall in France but do have some others on walls in UK......

Two passions I have..........classic cars and Formula 1..............only dillema is when both Lotus and Ferrari teams are racing............had to support Jaguar F1 though when they briefly raced before the team became Red Bull as I ran the prototype assembly and had a full inspection team so we did a lot of work on the Jaguar F1 chassis.

I really feel the final near 20 years of my career was an honour to be paid for doing a job that was a passion and to work with a team of Design Engineers and Technicians that at sometimes were always there to help me with my own cars. My only two regrets are I sold my Jaguars which included e-types and a rare 4 speed BRG manual XJS....MVC 867P and then late 80's sold my 246 Dino for the 308 I have now..... as Dino's prices went sky high and 308's dropped back.

In total owned 17 Elans (small and +2), 3 Europas (Renault and TC), 2 Esprits and my original Climax engined Elite...........oh how I wished I had them now. Not even many pictures but just remember some number plates but used to put private plates on so not sure what replacement plates were.

Anyone who has their history FPE 85J was a white +2S 130 I fitted a fabric roof to and then sold to a guy in Kenilworth, Warwickshire to fund my business venture............. 60 SPE was a white S3 the plate was supposed to be transferred back to me but I was somewhat ripped off and the new owner kept it but no doubt has been sold on now. If only digital cameras were around then............

I suspect the lady with CC back then was the 'bag carrier'. The Grand Prix was very much big cash back handers way back then and CC was known well to carry large sums of money around. Once I read he had to make a quick phone call from a public box and left an envelope with ?20K cash in the booth

What a bummer Alonso out DNF already...........safety car in so got to go............c'mon Lotus

I'll start with my home office.

The framed shadow box is a model of a Lotus Type 79 built by Jeff Morgan. The mounting plate is signed by Mario Andretti and Bob Dance (Chief Mechanic at the time) and the photo's of them signing it.

The framed letter is from Colin Chapman (his signature) at Lotus Engineering in 1955 responding to a potential customer at a motor show in the UK.

The diorama I built of a Lotus Garage 1/18th scale.

Hi Terry,

I have the Winner's Choice 'dealer' showroom poster of a Yellow Elan FHC with a Piper light aircraft behind it. Many years ago I had it copied in A3 format (around 50 of them). At the Donington show sat in the office whilst Graham Arnold and Ron Hickman were chatting and Ron signed all of them for me (what a nice chap!). Talking of Ron's autograph I notice one above where he signs himself Ron Hickman O.B.E. - if I recall correctly he left the OBE off all the little A3 posters

I also have these:

cambridge renderings.JPG and

these are genuine original renderings (drawn by Peter Cambridge and signed/dated in 1957) of the dashboard for the Climax Elite. Complete with a provenance letter from Peter too. Currently in negotiation to sell them so they may be going to a new home shortly!! (Only right really as i am not really into Elite's).

Not on the wall, but Automobilia.

Since 1966 I've had the Gear Knob from Jim Clark's Tasman Series Lotus 39.
I bought a Cortina GT500 ( limited production model built by Harry Firth to win the annual 500 mile production car race ) from a Ford dealer in Brisbane. The sale was handled by a Kiwi whose father owned a Ford dealership in N.Z. where the Team Lotus cars were prepared. He told me he acquired/ souvenired the Gear Knob from Clark's car and had fitted it to the Cortina in Australia because it used the close ratio gearbox from the Elan and Lotus Cortina.
He didn't see much value in it and was happy to leave it on the car..

Given to me by the previous (U.K) owner.
Were these known as cigarette cards?
Cheers,
