what's this wire for?

Red/Black wire in the engine bay, comes out of the same part of the loom that feeds the washer pump.

The wiring diagram shows it feeds something but can't decipher what it's supposed to be, also there isn't anything it could connect to.

Any ideas?

It's for the SOVY device that you don't have on a non-Federal RHD car

You can just see it in this picture of my engine bay:

It's not adding lightness, but it meant that looms could be shared between federal & non-federal cars.

I think that Phil is referring to the brake fluid level sensor cap that is fitted to the reservoir next to the washer bag/pump.It should be connected to a brake warning lamp on the dashboard I have arrowed it below.

The wireing diagram says that it goes to the "Servo brake fail switch" but brake fluid level sensor cap sounds better to me.

The question ist what is a "SOVY device"

SOVY is I believe the makers name or the trade name for the item.

In the past I misread Sovy as Servo in the wiring diagram I have, so it's good to sort it out. Not that I have either of them.

Or does the wiring connect sovie device directly to the warning light? i don't have brake servo.
Could be fine a Black wire ground to the washer pump ground; red wire to the warning light and from here to the positive point on tacheometer?

Finally i found an old sovie device complete, used in bad condition, but nice enough to be restored at http://www.TaylorMadeClassicCars.com

The switch near the warning light is purely to be able to test the warning bulb, it is in parallel to the wiring to the SOVY

You should be able to combine parts to make a nice assembly as long as the can is sound.

I just bought a New Old Stock from a Europa:

Europas used a machine Aluminium container rather than the steel cans that rot through.

Pay attention to the seals to the master cylinder, I found an "O" ring was a better seal than the original flat seal.

I think the Sovy uses the same warning light on the Dash as the Handbrake. For sure on UK +2 as on the Elan UK there's no room for a Sovy under the Airbox.
You soon know if there's a problem with the Brake Fluid level the pedal goes to the floor or a Brake Pad has fallen out a Rear Caliper

Sorry Alan, but there's plenty of room on a UK +2, mine certainly has it, & most others I believe. The master cylinders are not hidden under the air box as per the Elan, they are up on top, more beside it.

I know on a +2 there's room for a Sovy with a Pedal Box.
On my Sprint it's difficult enough just to remove a simple cap.
I can understand why some owners have fitted remote Brake Cylinders.

Just to add a little information on the Sovy:

1. The test switch is under the dash and is a momentary push button. At least on an original Federal 69 S4.

2. My original Sovy device disintegrated. It always leaked fluid from day 1 (from the factory), either from the container to the tandem reservoir or from the top. I could never get it sealed properly. Went with a simple cap and no Sovy/container as the solution for many years.

3. Replaced the Sovy now with a billet can and cap adapted from a Wilwood remote reservoir. Excellent quality but not cheap. Not original but a tasteful and bulletproof mod IMHO. No more leaks and very solid. Also, replaced my yellowed tandem reservoir with a NOS one, that recently became available.
