S2 Window lock

S2 Window lock lever
Does anyone have a picture, or could provide a description, of what the pin or leaver is to look like that moves the window up-lock to position? There is some kind of pin that screws into the lock lever, mine clearly are not original.

Best I can do with out stripping down, as I recall the lever operates a hook that prevents the window coming down.

Totally off-topic, but what I love about this site are all the little things you see in the background of the photos. For example, Brian clearly has a Sprint in addition to his S2, though we know that from his signature file.

What we probably didn't know is that he uses multiple oriental rugs as oil catch pans under that Sprint. Now that's luxury! :lol:

Actually it isn't to catch oil leaks (my cars don't really leak 8)) its to keep the cars warm and for me to lay on, one even has its own duvet :lol: the garage is also plumbed into the house central heating .....also prevents my tools going rusty on this damp little island

Well Brian, that was certainly a fast response, barely had time to make a coffee. :D
That is what I was looking for. The plastic part looks similar to the toggle switches. Mine were made from a cap screw it seems.
(Correct it screws into a nut on the leaver that puts moves stop piece of metal to prevent the window from coming or being pushed down. (not that I use them))

Hi Jack

Here is a photo of door handles from 26/4020 on the left with the N.Y. patina and the other on the right is the original out of 26/4597. these were underwater for about 6 hours along with the rest of the Elan back on the 7th of February 1978.
No window locks on either, 4045 does have them but its a couple miles from here so no photos.
There is a grommet in one of the door latches from 4020 that covers the hole, anyone else have them

I?m not sure its that simple, although its a while since I had mine stripped down, as I recall there is a pivoting ?hook lever? that goes into the window channel to prevent the window being pushed down.
I am not sure that this mechanism is fitted on all the cars as I do remember changing the parts for fittings that had this mechanism many years ago.
The manual states that they are fitted on cars that had a hard top but if it was fitted to cars supplied with a soft top I don't know.

Interesting info.
Don't know if mine are orig. or not, (don't have the hardtop but that doesn't mean anything) PO had two cars plus parts, and mine was entirely disassembled when I picked it up (other was sold and finished). The ones on my car have the oval holes and the window locks, spent some time freeing one side up as it was well protected with iron oxide.
The one side only "spare" I have in a bin, doesn't have the lock lever and has a round hole as in Gary's pictures above.
Logic would suggest a running change as without them there is no point in locking the car, covertible or hardtop. (not that I do)
However logic didn't always prevail... :)

I figured I would somehow make some new handles now that I know what they look like.
Incidentally the metal part that goes into the window track is just steel, so the glass of the window stops against it! Not a good design unless there was to be a plastic thing or whatever on the end.

Brian,
Since you have the handles there - what is the thread size, I am thinking 10-32 but this is only from memory.
I recall a bit of a trick to assemble as there was a spring in mine so once I take out the handles, may have to remove the entire lach again to reassemble. Maybe the spring was added. :?

I don't know what the thread is.....is there any easy way of checking/measuring? no trick to refit the rod with mine, poke it in the hole, locate the thread and screw it in. I don't recall a spring on mine, from memory the pivot to engage/disengage the locking hook is an over centre pivot action.....of course my memory could be playing tricks on me.

Hi Brian,
According to my handy dandy tap drill/dec. equivalents chart #10 is .1935 inches dia. but will likely measure slightly less over the threads. Threads per inch is either 24 or 32 for #10, but easier to measure with thread gauges when so small - Not critical to measure however, I'll find out when I work on them again anyway.
I recall the same re overcentre or flat spring and detent, don't know why the coil springs were added.

Here is a couple more pics of the rod with dimensions as best I can get, I found an old thread gauge but not really sure what it reads in :? the nearest threads that appear to fit the rod are marked 0.8 on the thread gauge.
