What is this for?

Can anyone tell be what the metal strap in this picture is for. Should it have a rubber seal attached to it?

It is the rail for the corner rubber door seal.

Remove them and keep them as a patern for the new seal. The ruber seal should be 2 inches longer towards the front of the car if you want it to impeed some of the rain to get in to the car via the front top of the door.

Is this another difference between cars of differing ages? My car doesn't seem to have it? Were they only fitted on early cars and if so, what changed so that they were no longer needed?

I've not got one either, and no trace of ever having had one ! Water does occassionally get in at the front of the door so maybe I need one - anyone got any pictures of what one looks like when it's not missing ?

I'll echo this, if someone could post a pic of an intact one so we can see the profile of the missing rubber that would be great.

If i remember correctly. I think the seal came from a Land Rover but i don't know what model. Perhaps this will jog someones memory

You can buy a weather rubber seal in a car parts store and glue it with high quality glue over the metal rail or remove it and simply glue the seal to the body. Remember: you need a longer piece than the original (two inches more towards the front of the car) if you want that thing to keep at least some of the rain out.

I am traveling (in Brazil) until the 14th so I will not be able to take a picture until then.

My reward for seeing the question in this post and thinking "perhaps I can help" - this piece is one (two) of a very few things left in the rebuild for which I have (had) no idea what they were for. I had a vague memory of a tacky, ineffective piece of weather seal in that spot but had never seen the metal strip.

I would also benefit from seeing a pic of the profile and how it is installed. My PO had installed something completely different on the door, and I had assumed it was the stock set-up.

I bought two seals from Susan Miller last November, but I had no idea how they were installed or what they should look like! When I ordered them, she mentioned "the OE secondary seals are obsolete, but I have something similar which would do". I can post a picture of what she sent once I see the original to compare to; may help some with finding a substitute locally.
