Elan Flairs - the good the bad and some ugly ones

PostPost by: RedS4 » Mon Jul 30, 2012 4:27 pm

I was cleaning up my photo collection and came upon another shot of the black racing Elan this time at Sydney Motor Sport Park. This shot does show how wide the flares really are...

Well, here are mine. It was determined that these were done at some point in the 70's maybe even the late 60's. They aren't pretty, and they need to either be redone into stock flares or 26R flares at some point, or just left as is.

Saw this in Switzerland, the owner assured me the car came from the Lotus factory like this?

Looks quite 'normal' from the front..

Does anyone (in the US) have a set of molds for 26R flares? I'd like to build (mold)them onto my car rather than attach them. John in Seattle

The front flairs are part of a Vegatune outer skin mod. Can't remember where the rear ones came from, but probably Vegatune as well. Photos from early 1980s. Car currently in the middle of a major rebuild and modification process.

As the second owner and modifier of 26/0250 I am happy to report that it has returned home to Norwich after an extended stay in California, USA. Perhaps some will be interested in my latest bodywork on my one owner 69 Elan.

I took off the windshield wipers many moons ago. I use RainX instead. RainX is a hydrophobic coating, repelling rain and leaving a clear windshield. Interestingly, we tried RainX on our Olympic rowing shells for races. It also helped, but there is a class of coating called hydrophillic that decrease hydrodynamic resistance even more.

Cheers,

Rohan,
My reference to 26/0250 goes back several pages to the '65 black roadster that is not a street machine. The posted photos are of my '69 coupe which is still in my possession in California. Still need to have wipers to be legal, but not much chance of being pulled over for it. Same goes for no front licence plate.

Very early S1 used for grass track racing in the US - remnants of original arches underneath, ugly!
