S3 Dashboard Warning Lights

PostPost by: johnstice » Mon Nov 05, 2007 12:59 am

I'm restoring a 1967 Elan S3 LH FHC #6643. My dash has what appears to be three holes for warning lights, (1) each at 3, 9 and 12 o'clock around the steering column.

The two holes at 3 and 9 o'clock are 1/2", the one at 12 o'clock is 3/8". My car came in boxes but I've found (1) 1/2" Amber and (1) 1/2" Red warning light lens/sleeves. I assume these are for the brake failure and handbrake warning functions.

Can someone tell which of these two lenses go where? Can someone tell me what is supposed to go in the 3/8" hole at 12 o'clock?

Any and all help is appreciated

Thank you

John

Could the 12 o'clock be the through hole for the fastener that attaches the top of the steering column bracket to the dash?

12 o'clock is for a bolt for the steering column bracket, comes through from the back and gets a washer and 'acorn nut'. Someone else will have to speak up about the others, can't get to my S3 without moving the +2, sorry.

My '67 S3 fhc has 2 warning lights just below the oil / water temp gauge. One is handbrake warning, the other is heated rear screen....and next to that is the switch for the screen. Those are the only 'extra' warning lights on the dash.

So I guess that one of yours will be the handbrake warning as per the diag...do you have a heated rear screen? If not it sounds like a P/O addition.

We've got two S3 FHC but both are RHD. The only warning light is the handbrake and that's way off to the right (to the outside of the car). I think you mean the three bolts which hold the steering column bracket. The two small holes at 9 & 3 o'clock are for Allan key headed bolts whilst the larger top hole is for the Phillips type chromed bolt.

All three bolts hold the top end of the steering column - there are two halves to this animal and the bolts which hold them together also hold the indicator repeater unit.

Thank you DJ, oldOkie, Mark and Peter for your responses,

Good point Mark about the heated rear screen. Yes, I have one which raises questions about where the warning lamp and switch should be located.

There was a hole on the old dashboard in the middle on the bottom row which I thought was a DPO mistake and did not drill. Could this have been for the heated rear screen control?

Any and all help is appreciated.

I found my old heated rear window switch this morning while looking through some old spares. I never did find a similar replacement.
On my car (71 Sprint) it is fitted to the under dash trim near your left knee, the blue warning light is next to the hand brake light on the dash.
