Boot floor

Hi!
I am missing the boot floor(on top of the petrol tank) in my S4 Elan.
Does any of you have pictures or drawings of the panels and brackets? I need some pointers to how they look, to allow me to make some new ones.

In my S4 the fuel tank is the boot floor. Timber panel covers the spare tyre well, flush with fuel tank. Carpet goes over the top of both. The Service Parts List (B3) doesn't show anything that covers the fuel tank.

Here is a photo to give you an idea.

If you have the Parts list - see diagram B3 - three parts numbered 18 (Boot Floor Assembly). If you don't have it I can scan a copy (in a couple of days when I'm back at work) and send it to you.

Looking in from the rear there are three pieces. A large one to the left of the fuel tank (covers spare wheel well), a small one to the right and a small one between the fuel tank and the rear bulkhead. These fit flush with the tank and form the floor. Carpet goes over the whole lot.

There are three panels for the boot floor: one over the spare tire, one small one covering the space between the gas tank and inner fender side, and one bridging the gap between the gas tank and forward boot floor.

Your best bet would be looking for another S4 with all the panels and making templates from those. Although the parts manual shows the panels, no dimensions are given.

Excellent shots Gary. And Petter, take a close look at the boot-floor-2 jpeg pic near the bottom. It shows a long nipple on the board that, when the floor is in place, is pushed in a little spring loaded receptacle that is attached to the front of the wheel well in the car. Hopefully you have this piece. My car's not near me at the moment so if pics are needed, I'm sure Gary can come through.

In my old S2 there were three brackets on which to sit the panel, apart from the tyre. On my car there was only one bracket so I made a couple. In the photo bracket "A" is an original and "B" & "C" are my efforts.
There is also a cover for the RH fender well which hides the fuel pump and filter as well as the fire extinguisher tank.

I made a new panel from 6mm ply to sit by the side of the tank. With the carpet in place it looks perfect.

I was looking around the garage a couple weeks ago and moved some parts on top of the TVR Grantura bonnet and noticed some vinal covered, horse haired backed, mat. Yesterday I unfolded the mat and "gee that looks like the boot floor mat out of 26/4997" I thought. I decided it would be a good thing to see how it fit so I pulled a few things out of the boot that were there for winter storage and tucked it in, and I have to admit that after 40 years it may even find a perminant home some day. I need to give it a good cleaning but other than that it looks good. I guess its the only one of the few that I have ever seen but maybe you folks have one in your S1 or S2

My boot floor mat didn't look too much worse than that when I replaced it a few years back with an aftermarket carpet (via Don Tingle IIRC). I have since learned not to throw away anything original, no matter what the condition - much to my wife's dismay.

Gary, I may have to borrow those pieces so I can copy them for the 36/7502. Some day when you come up to Ayer. It is warmer now. Beau needs a field trip!

Just one of the many things missing. body sanding starts this week. It will be warmer outside.

I used a little Palmolive dishwashing detergent and warm water to clean it up a bit and left it in the sun to dry for an hour or so. A gallon antifreeze jug on its side between the spare tire and the left wing, the 4 x 4 block I use to drive on if I ever have a flat is in front of the spare, a quart of oil and a quart of brake fluid are next to the fuel tank, no plywood on the spare. here are a couple more pictures. After all the hard work this morning Beau and I headed out for a ride to Duxbury for some slow back road Sunday driving.

you can see where one of the hood bows was rusting inplace for quite a while.

Gary, is the mat the same material as the Mk 1 Cortina boot mats? If so, someone over here is remaking those (for the Cortina 1, 2 and the Escort) and I'll do some digging to see if the material can be bought.
